Refined by nature

DOLSERAU HALL HOTEL, WALES

Hospitality, Southern Snowdonia

The Brief: Set within the landscape of Snowdonia, Dolserau Hall hotel returns as the destination for walking holidays, a place centred around community, connection, and belonging.

The Approach: The client’s ambition was clear: to create social areas within the hotel that support guests not just visually, but experientially, where the environment actively enhances rest, interaction, and time spent in nature. The design was guided by two core principles. Together, they shaped a calibrated approach to the interiors that responds to both place and person.

Biophilic Design — using nature as a regulating and grounding force

Sensory Awareness — recognising that guests experience environments differently

Biophilic Design in Practice

Rather than applying nature as an aesthetic layer, the design allows it to be felt throughout all social areas of the building.

  • Visual connections to the surrounding landscape

  • Materials that reflect the textures and tones of Snowdonia

  • Natural light shapes the atmosphere throughout the day

  • A confident colour palette that sits comfortably within its setting

The intention was not to bring nature in, but to remove the boundary between inside and out.

Sensory Awareness at a Hospitality Scale

Designing for hospitality means designing for diversity. Guests arrive with different energy levels, preferences, and sensory thresholds. Some seek calm and quiet. Others seek stimulation and social interaction. The interiors were therefore designed to support both.

Balancing Complexity & Order

At the heart of the project sits a key biophilic design principle: We’re drawn to spaces that feel layered but not chaotic, where there’s enough detail to engage us, but enough order to feel calm.

This balance was carefully considered across all spaces:

  • Social areas introduce warmth, texture, and layering to encourage interaction

  • Quieter zones reduce visual and sensory load to support rest and recovery

  • Layouts are intuitive, allowing guests to navigate spaces without effort

The result is an environment that feels engaging without overwhelming, supporting both connection and retreat.

The social areas within Dolserau Hall now offer more than beauty. When interiors are aligned with both environment and experience, they move beyond aesthetics and begin to truly support the people within them. Explore & book a stay at Dolserau Hall with HF Holidays.
