Refined by nature

Quietly Refined, Newbuilt Essex

whole house project-4 bed newbuilt

New built semi-detached property, Saffron Walden, Essex

Description: This four-bedroom semi-detached new-build was envisioned as a refined new beginning - a sophisticated, minimal sanctuary that balances warmth, style, and a sense of calm. The intention was not simply to decorate, but to shape an environment that balances restraint with warmth. Clean architectural lines were softened through material layering and controlled contrast, allowing the space to feel both contemporary and deeply comfortable.

Brief: The client sought a sophisticated sanctuary — one that maximised natural daylight while maintaining a neutral, elegant palette. As the home is shared with adult children and regularly hosts guests, the spatial experience needed to feel welcoming without losing its sense of calm. Each room was considered in relation to the whole, ensuring visual continuity and comfort across the entire property.

Application of biophilic design: Nature-led thinking informed the project from the outset. Rather than introducing overt natural motifs, the design focused on the biophilic principle of Complexity and Order — balancing clarity with subtle richness. A restrained palette created a sense of visual calm, while layered textures, natural materials, and calibrated colour accents introduced sensory calm. Soft tactile finishes and thoughtful lighting design enhanced sensory comfort, ensuring the home feels supportive throughout the day. Light was treated as a material in its own right — used to create rhythm, highlight material variation, and reinforce connection to the outdoors.

We had moved in to a new build and saw the opportunity to use this ‘blank canvas’ to create a space that brought out what we both wanted in our new home, however, neither of us felt we had the confidence to pull this together and this was the first home that we had owned together so really important to feel that we were both heard so reached out to Jana for her expertise and partnership. We felt we were listened to - we now have a home with some lovely design features, a minimalistic vibe that also feels very welcoming.
